Olympiad 2018 Successfully Completed

On January 27th, 2018,
SOMES team led by Mr. Rabindra Acharya, successfully organized the Maths-Physics Olympiad, one of two pre-events of MechTrix8.0, on the day. The event , a continuation of last years Olympiad for Mechtrix7.0, was targeted to High School students (+2, A-levels) as a means of encouraging young students pursuing the field of STEM. With more than 200 students from different institutions, spanning across the valley participating, the event was a great success and a perfect way to kick off the festivities of MechTrix 8.0.

The event was formally initiated at 11 am while the exam itself started at 11:15 with the physics portion to be attempted in the first half. After a 10 minute break the next half began sharply at 1:30 bringing the event to a close on 3:30.

MechTrix8.0 is on the horizon at 19th, 20th and 21st of this month. Do mark your calendars!

International Symposium Control-, Energy- and Nano-Engineering (ISCEN)

Jan 27th, 2018,

Society Of Mechanical Engineering Students(SOMES), IOE, Pulchowk, successfully organized the “1st International Symposium Control-, Energy- and Nano-Engineering (ISCEN)” with the motto “Mechanical Engineering: Engine for nation’s prosperity” in National Academy of Science And Technology(NAST). The event was one of the two pre-events of MechTrix8.0, the 8th National Mechanical Exhibition, on the day, with 100s of students from undergraduate levels of various disciplines participating.

The event was formally initiated at 10 am following a brief overview by the coordinator Mr. Sulav Parajuli. It was then after the speech of the chief guest Prof. Dr. Tri Ratna Bajracharya, the program was continued with renowned Academician Er. Rishi Shah, NAST.

Prof. Dr. Rameshwar Adhikari from Research Centre for Applied Science and Technology (RECAST) presented on ‘Nanotechnology: An opportunity for Nepal’ where he compared the self-sustainability of Nepal in our past history with the current dependency of Nepal to foreign countries. Dr. Mahabir Pun from National Innovation Center (NIC) talked about his missions and visions in NIC and how students will get involved in it for their projects and technical and financial support. Then, Dr. Rabindra Dhaka, Senior Scientist, NAST presented on “Tacking Fuel Crisis by Managing Wastes” where he talked about bioenergy technology, biochar applications, waste management approaches, and plastics and pyrolysis.

Dr. Since Raj Shakya from Center for Energy Studies, IOE, TU presented on “Role of R&D in RET Development” where he showed that the country’s overall development and prosperity is directly dependent on the research and development of renewable energy technology, comparing the development charts of Nepal with foreign countries. Olympiad Question-Soultions

With the successful completion of Math-Physics Olympiad 2018, a pre-event of MechTrix8.0 held on 27th January,2018, the team would like to express gratitude towards all the participants. We were extremely delight to witness first-hand the interest of our young students towards STEM. Although, the questions were designed to be above bar to really asses the problem-solving skills, our participants did extraordinarily well. Of course, we’ll need a little more time before we can publish the results, but here are the questions asked on the event along with its solution set. Participants are welcomed to evaluate their efforts on the Olympiad, as for newcomers, feel free to browse through and self-asses your abilities.
